Оказалось, что cloth masks are completely useless so that Europeans are banning them in planеs and surgical masks are only ~10% effective (for unvaccinated people).

Интуитивно, мне кажется, что для вакцинированных установить статистически достоверный эффект хоть каких-то масок не удастся.

As I said in our discussion in another thread surgical masks were 10% effective when the prevalence of masks wearing went from about 10% to 40%. For an individual they should be about 30% effective, which is not bad at all. Cloth masks are indeed useless, no surprise there.

I'm getting 25% = 10% * (100%/40%) but anyway - if masks are the only game in town then people should use them and mandates to wear them indoors could be sort of justifiable. But not for vaccinated people.

Before the intervention ~10% were wearing masks, after ~40%, so it is 10%* (100/(40-10))~33% I think.

In any case, it is not as good as vaccination but far better than nothing. I think this justifies indoor mandates when significant part of the population is unvaccinated as long as surgical masks are required. Hard to say anything definitely about vaccinated people but their risk is far smaller in any case.

And that's exactly the figure a saw a few days ago I forgot where (Reddit, Slashdot or some such).

Was it based on this study or some other considerations?

In the study, surgical masks prevented one in three symptomatic infections among community members 60 years and older.

One thing that puzzles me is why it only works for 50+ age group.

When the data doesn't make sense you have to doubt the data.

And, of course, younger people must wear masks anyway ;)

There could be different reasons. For example, compliance could be better with older people.

Unfortunately, if we have a mask mandate, it should be for everyone, even if they don't get much benefit from it personally. There is simply no practical way of having a mask mandate for 60+ age group.
