Basically, our democracy depended on a single person (Pence), who was under tremendous pressure to go along with this.

Я думаю это не совсем так, потому что есть ещё суды. Но в первом приближении - да. Интересно соберется ли кто нибудь после этого как-то защитить систему от такой атаки.

Who knows, but intuitively it is hard to believe that the courts would be able reverse a coup which had already taken place.
