in medicine - jeans are forbidden and this is enforced ( if not on weekends), and dress code is explicit and very much enforced. at all levels. the higher levels don't need enforcement. they are already complying.
one place i saw CA obviously did not have a dress code. stanford. i hear now they do, too.
patients - by multiple surveys - don't like white coats period, but htey want to see a "professionally dressed" doctor.
