The extent of the sea ice in the Arctic at the end of the annual summer melt was 1.79 million square miles, 610,000 square miles below the 1981-2010 average for the same date and the eighth lowest year in the 38-year satellite record…

Ice cover at its lowest extent for the year was 193,000 square miles [46%] above 2016’s minimum and 483,000 square miles [almost factor of 5] more than the record lows seen in 2012.
