Depends. We (US) put a lot of efforts and made bunch of implicit assurances in regards of weapons of mass destruction, nuclear weapons, and generic world wide security (through the organization and active participation in UN security council, etc).

I don't think they are formally binding, but morally, an attack with a threat of nuclear attack would most likely make US morally responsible to react.

This is the best argument I see so far. If we (the US) to give in to nuclear blackmail, the world order would change with every nuclear country potentially using similar methods and non-nuclear countries rushing to get nukes. Thus it is in our interest to make sure that Russian cannot be perceived as victorious.
