Младшая дочь, кажется через универ, но это не точно и неважно, записалась волонтировать в какую-то outreach program заниматься с детьми, которые ходят в kindergarten, т.е. примерно 5-6 летками. Опыт у нее такой есть: в НЙ она подрабатывала в двух дорогих частных школах, одной из них еврейской, где плата за обучение превышала её доход. Что-то им там после уроков про науку рассказывала. Еврейские дети были намного более испорченные, но в целом ей нравилось там работать – дети были умные, внимали, интересовались.

Звонит, спрашивает в каком возрасте она научилась читать. Говорим, что когда в школу пошла уже умела, но точный момент не помним. А кто научил? Тоже не помним. Алфавиту, наверное, научили бабушки, а дальше как-то сама. А что?

Да, говорит, никто из моих детей не умеет читать и даже алфавита не знает. К тому же, ничего не соображают. Я у них спрашиваю из каких звуков состоят самые простые слова, например sad (s, a, d) и никто не может ответить, ни один. А что за дети? Дети в основном из семей Hispanic immigrants.

Поделилась этой историей со своими housemates. Ну, понятно, что они там все ультра-левые, включая и нашу дочь, так что ничего неполиткорректного сказать нельзя. В общем на неё там напустились. Ты не понимаешь как трудно приходится детям из двуязычных семей, где дома говорят не на английском! Конечно у них там языки в голове перемешиваются и им очень трудно разобраться где какой, вот они и отстают, поэтому им и надо помогать!

Она им, конечно, ответила, что сама выросла именно в такой семье, и ничего у нее не перемешивалось, и нисколько ей это по жизни не помешало. Не знаю как у её соседок, а у нее самой, кажется, зародились какие-то сомнения.

My point is that all of those things -- knowing alphabet, ability to read, knowing letter sounds, etc. are all nurture.

I am not a fan of the modern left denial of the existence of talent and natural abilities. I think it is misguided and not supported by evidence.

However, I don't think that your example is relevant to that discussion.

For example, the recent California math K-12 framework proposal said "We Reject Ideas of Natural Gifts and Talents".

Oh, that one. I think they formulate it differently now, but it's still not a great idea. However, I understand where this comes from — the persistent idea that only talented kids can do well in school math classes. We do need to replace this with the conviction that any kid who is not learning disabled can learn math at school level if given reasonable time and support. The education people, as usual, mean well but are too incompetent to do anything reasonable about it.

I think they do formulate it differently -- I was not able to find this sentence in the latest draft.

Of course, we need to teach all kids a decent level of math and they (or the vast majority, at least) are capable of learning it. But getting rid of talented programs seems like a problematic way to go about it.

OK, we agree on something!

I'm not entirely sure myself whether it is relevant. The fact is, this young woman who is not generally known for challenging any of the left dogmas suddenly started asking questions. I thought it was interesting, is all.

I see, that makes sense. But one has to be careful not to make the opposite error when challenging dogmas :)
