There is a good reason, why all normal automakers still support dealership model aka franchising and probably will never abandon it.
1. it gives good exposure to end customers and doing so increases sales.
2. dealer usually knows nuances of local market and customers habits much better than distant clerk sitting somewhere.
3. Dealer is responsible for customization of cars and fitting to local market and local regulations. It is especially important when the customer sits in different country.
4. dealer may provide additional services: consulting, loans, discounts, phone support and such.
5. customer may see and feel all the cars, sit inside or take it to test-drive. Which most people consider necessary.
6. maker needs not to manage workforce, facilities, pay salaries, bills, local taxes, obey myriads of local laws, regulations and such.
