I am actually confused by your question. What purpose does standing up to a popular wannabe autocrat serve?

It makes it easier for other people to speak up against him; it loosens his grip on the party, and ultimately it makes it more likely that he will be replaced as the party leader.

And yes, it can very well cost those ten republican their reelection, not to mention a very real physical danger that they put themselves in. That's what makes their vote brave.
