Злопыхатель ещё забыл упомянуть о стоимости и энергозатратах на переработку использованных батарей. По любому, чтобы добиться какой-то экономии на суммарном выбросе СО2, EVs должны иметь длинный пробег (что, наверное, реально или станет реально чуть позже) и должны использовать электричество из возобновляемых источников или хотя бы природного газа. Если владельцы EVs будут подзаряжаться дома от своих собственных солнечных панелей, то с этим тоже проблем не будет, если не считать выбросов СО2 при производстве оных панелей.

It is egregious that EV subsides are funded by the average tax-payer so that the rich can buy their EVs at subsidized prices.

Yes, charging EV from coal makes no sense. But the coal energy has been dropping like a rock and being replaced by wind/solar in the last 10 years or so. https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=43895
Right now new wind is cheaper than coal in most places.

I don't think EV's have any issues with durability. Modern EV's are more reliable than comparable gas cars and will likely last longer. Early crappy EV's like early Nissan Leaf had problems with battery durability (lack of active cooling, etc). But I think these issues are essentially solved by all manufacturers with reasonably large batteries (200+ miles).
