According to data from the Trancik Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Tesla Model S P100D saloon driven in the US midwest produces 226 grammes of carbon dioxide (or equivalent) per kilometre over its lifecycle — a significant reduction to the 385g for a luxury 7-series BMW. But the [internal combustion engine Mitsubishi] Mirage emits even less, at just 192g.

The MIT data substantiate a study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology last year: “Larger electric vehicles can have higher lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions than smaller conventional vehicles." [Duh!]

As things stand, a small car like the Mirage could be illegal to drive in cities across Europe, the UK and China by 2030, as incoming bans on combustion engine cars will pay no attention to fuel economy or efficiency of production.

Well, a more reasonable approach is to simply tax emissions. However, electric cars are gradually becoming greener as more wind/solar energy is coming online. Coal energy is now more expensive than wind and (in many places) solar.

Anything is more reasonable than banning internal combustion engine.

If they taxed ALL emissions, not just car emissions, that would be at least consistent but almost as dumb. The conditions and climates are so different that it's impossible to do it right.

Well, it depends, I think. In places like Beijing or Delhi with their terrible air quality a ban or a high tax is fully justified, I think.

Кстати, подумал, что это технологический триумф Теслы. Model S P100D чуть ли не в 2 раза больше и в бесконечное число раз быстрее, чем Мираж, а отличие меньше чем на 20%.
