D.C. council member Trayon White Sr. posted the footage to his Facebook page at around 7.20 a.m. on Friday. In the clip, White can be heard making the outlandish remarks while filming snowfall from inside his car with a cellphone.

Guardian опубликовала душещипательную историю молодого человека по имени Christopher Wylie, который apparently придумал весь этот бизнес. Or, as Wylie describes it, he was the gay Canadian vegan who somehow ended up creating “Steve Bannon’s psychological warfare mindfuck tool”. В силу означенных свойств, он конечно хотел помочь либеральным демократам, но те оказались тупыыыыые и не заинтересовались его идеей. Зато Бэннон и Мерсер всё поняли с пол-оборота.
Газета называет его whistleblower но на какое преступление он настучал насвистел толком не объясняет. На прямой вопрос он отвечает «... I assumed it was entirely legal and above board.» Я так и не понял чем это целевое вещание в соц сетях принципиально отличается от зомбирования населения с помощью газет, радио и ТВ. Если бы это новое идеологическое оружие попало бы к левым, то всё было бы хорошо и правильно.
Но есть нюанс. Им были нужны фейсбучные данные, которые для них накопал некто, из песни слова не выкинешь, Коган, наш бывший соотечественник. Сделал он это очень интересным образом:
he advertised for people who were willing to be paid to take a personality quiz on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and Qualtrics. At the end of which Kogan’s app, called thisismydigitallife, gave him permission to access their Facebook profiles. And not just theirs, but their friends’ too. On average, each “seeder” – the people who had taken the personality test, around 320,000 in total – unwittingly gave access to at least 160 other people’s profiles, none of whom would have known or had reason to suspect.
В этом месте я конкретно офигел. Оказывается в ФБ можно давать третьим лицам доступ к данным своих друзей, которым об этом знать не надо, причем с одобрения ФБ: Kogan did have permission to pull Facebook data, but for academic purposes only. What’s more, under British data protection laws, it’s illegal for personal data to be sold to a third party without consent. При этом не утверждается, что эти персональные данные не могут быть использованы для чего-то там ещё.
Более спокойный взгляд на историю предлагает Forbes:

Everything the company stands accused of (which again it strenuously denies) are simply what academics at universities all across the world do every day with the full knowledge and approval of their ethical oversight boards... In the end, instead of holding Cambridge Analytica up as a villain, if society at large has concerns about how their Facebook social media personas can be used to monitor and potentially manipulate them, they should take a closer look at the platform that makes it all possible: Facebook.
