I don't think China is that unique except for its sheer scale. Something very similar happened in Japan after WWII (Japanese economic miracle) and in other countries, such as Taiwan, South Kore, etc.

These are all South Asian countries. Is it important? It is not so clear. North Korea is a disaster, while South Korea is rich. It seems you just need the right initial conditions.
