Public discourse and official comment were muted because it was a religious holiday on Wednesday, but what emerged was alarm — even betrayal — across the political spectrum in a country where the war commands wide public support. The fact that the negotiations between the US and Iran are expected to be based on Iranian demands has raised intense concern in Israel, as has concern that President Donald Trump might be eager to end the war.
“There has never been such a political disaster in our history,” Yair Lapid, the leader of the opposition, who vigorously backed the war, wrote on X.
Yair Golan, of the left-leaning Democrats, wrote, “The nuclear program was not destroyed. The ballistic threat remains. The regime remains intact and is even emerging from this war stronger.”
Without these capabilities dismantled, added Avigdor Lieberman, a right-leaning former defense minister, Israel will have to eventually launch another military campaign “under harsher conditions and at a heavier cost.”
Those sentiments were echoed across Israeli TV, which featured interviews with concerned Israelis worried about what comes next.
Israel’s biggest concern regarding the Iranian ceasefire are the 440 kilograms (970 pounds) of enriched uranium Iran holds, enough for 10 atomic bombs, wrote veteran military analyst Ron Ben-Yishai on Ynet. He added, “A look at the details shows that Iran has not backed off from its brazen demands in recent weeks. For now, there is no apparent reason for the optimism on the side of the American president.”
