Impeachment! ( another one )

[identity profile] ny-quant.livejournal.com 2025-09-09 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would anyone want to impeach such an upstanding citizen?!

Because these cliwns have nothing else to do

This one is even better although not quite so salacious.

US Energy department posted the following on X a day ago:
"Wind and solar energy infrastructure is essentially worthless when it is dark outside, and when the wind is not blowing."

I don't expect much of congressmen, Republican or Democratic (check out Harry Reid https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/21/special-series/harry-reid-ufo.html for comparison).

But DOE used to be a serious organization, with high level physicists, even Nobel prize winners, leading it. Compare it to this caveman-level nonsense they are spouting now.

[identity profile] ny-quant.livejournal.com 2025-09-10 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
> caveman-level nonsense

You don't mean the claim that solar doesn't work during the night, do you?

[identity profile] misha-b.livejournal.com 2025-09-10 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This is pretty caveman-style knowledge. The implications for the grid are complicated.

[identity profile] ny-quant.livejournal.com 2025-09-10 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. And let's not pretend that dems understand the grids any better.

So, what nonsense are you talking about.

[identity profile] misha-b.livejournal.com 2025-09-10 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This is not dems or reps -- this is DOE, a formerly serious organization which supports physics research and many other things.

> So, what nonsense are you talking about.

The energy infrastructure is obviously not worthless, even if it does not produce energy continuously. This is like saying that my furniture is worthless when I am not at home.

[identity profile] ny-quant.livejournal.com 2025-09-10 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
In that quote above, there is this "when it is dark outside" caveat. When, not at all times.

[identity profile] misha-b.livejournal.com 2025-09-10 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
As an observation it is caveman-level. I don't need the DOE to tell me that when it is dark the solar panels do produce energy. I doubt anyone learns anything new from this.

The more interesting question is why DOE feels compelled to post this. The likely answer is that they are simply parroting Trump who keeps saying such things to disparage wind/solar.

Right, "In September 2025, Wright wrote on social media platform X that solar power cannot meet global energy demands and that covering the entire planet in solar panels would only provide 20% of demand."

Where do they even get those morons..

Perhaps but they guy actually understands energy and physics.

Perhaps. That doesn't make him expert in anything else.

This is for idiots who believe that we can completely get rid of fossil fuels.

[identity profile] misha-b.livejournal.com 2025-09-11 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
They are not making some sort of reasoned argument.

In any case, getting rid of fossil fuels will take a long time, but they can be mostly replaced for electric power generation by some combination of nuclear/renewables. Nuclear needs to be a lot cheaper though.

[identity profile] ny-quant.livejournal.com 2025-09-11 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt about "mostly". So far, power generation from fossils only grows.

[identity profile] misha-b.livejournal.com 2025-09-11 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
We will see. The trend looks good. Also most of the coal has been replaced by gas which is a huge improvement.

[identity profile] ny-quant.livejournal.com 2025-09-11 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No, the trend doesn't look good at all.

[identity profile] ny-quant.livejournal.com 2025-09-11 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This thing is global. US matters much less than China.

[identity profile] misha-b.livejournal.com 2025-09-12 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
China has been moving toward nuclear/renewables quite hard recently. But it takes time for it to make a dent in its huge coal consumption.

[identity profile] ny-quant.livejournal.com 2025-09-12 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. China's policy is "all of the above". They understand they need energy and they are willing to get it from all sources. No ideology, just practicality. They expand nuclear, solar and coal all at the same time. While various idiots in our country fight each other.

[identity profile] misha-b.livejournal.com 2025-09-12 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Coal is a 19th century technology, there is a good reason it is dying in the US -- it is dirty and dangerous.

The growth in Chinese energy consumption recently comes primarily from renewable energy: https://ember-energy.org/latest-insights/china-energy-transition-review-2025/

[identity profile] ny-quant.livejournal.com 2025-09-12 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Baloney. Here's a wiki for you:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_sector_in_China

There's a chart there that show that energy production grows from all sources:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7c/Electricity_production_in_China.svg/2560px-Electricity_production_in_China.svg.png

[identity profile] misha-b.livejournal.com 2025-09-12 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The chart ends in 2023.

If you look at the table by year, the change in solar from 2023 to 2024 is massive and accounts for almost 50% of the total change (most of the rest is hydro + wind, I was surprised nuclear did not increase much).

[identity profile] ny-quant.livejournal.com 2025-09-12 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)

That's just one year. And they are still adding coal.

[identity profile] misha-b.livejournal.com 2025-09-13 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of solar capacity has been installed over the last few years and has been coming online very recently. I could not tell from the table whether they were still adding coal though.

It is true that we are a long way from replacing coal even with gas.

[identity profile] ny-quant.livejournal.com 2025-09-13 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You can't tell from the table but you can still google it. Or you can extrapolate from previous years, it is very straightforward.

Forget about replacing. It will take decades for "green" power to catch up with fossils.

[identity profile] misha-b.livejournal.com 2025-09-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks like you are right, they are still building it, although much less than the renewables.

Yeah, it will take a while.

[identity profile] misha-b.livejournal.com 2025-09-28 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Btw, i've seen a good explanation of why they are investing in clean energy and coal at the same time. Basically their main goal is energy independence, they don't want to depend on oil but they have a lot of coal.
